Chapter 27

1 Then came near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah. 2 They stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the leaders and all the assembly by the door of the tent of meeting, saying, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered against the Lord, in the company of Korah, but died in his own sin and had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father diminish from among his family, because he has no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.”

5 Moses brought their case before the Lord. 6 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You will certainly give them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and you will cause the inheritance of their father to pass on to them.

8 You will speak to the children of Israel, saying, “If a man dies, and has no son, then you will cause his inheritance to pass on to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, then you will give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, then you will give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father has no brothers, then you will give his inheritance to his closest kinsman in his family, and he will possess it. And it will be for the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also will be gathered to your people as Aaron your brother was gathered. 14 For you rebelled against My commandment in the Wilderness of Zin when the congregation argued against Me. You did not show My holiness at the waters before their eyes.” (These are the waters of Meribah in Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.)

15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the assembly 17 who will go out before them, and who will go in before them, and who will lead them out, and who will bring them in, so the assembly of the Lord will not be like sheep who do not have a shepherd.”

18 The Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him, 19 and cause him to stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the assembly, and command in their sight. 20 You will put some of your majesty on him, in order that all the assembly of the children of Israel will listen. 21 He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him about the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word will they go out, and at his word they will come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, even all the assembly.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and he took Joshua, and he caused him to stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the assembly. 23 And he laid his hands on him and commanded him as the Lord spoke by the hand of Moses.

Chapter 28

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Command the children of Israel and say to them: My offering, My bread for My sacrifices made by fire, as a pleasing aroma to Me, you will guard to offer to Me at their time. 3 You will say to them: This is the fire offering which you will bring near to the Lord: two male lambs in their first year, without blemish, day by day, as a regular burnt offering. 4 The one lamb you will offer in the morning, and the other lamb you will offer at evening, 5 and one-tenth of an ephah of flour as a grain offering, mingled with one-fourth of a hin of beaten oil. 6 It is a regular burnt offering, which was ordained at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, a sacrifice made by fire to the Lord. 7 Its drink offering will be one-fourth of a hin for the one lamb. In a holy place you will pour the strong wine to the Lord as a drink offering. 8 The other lamb you will offer at evening. As the morning grain offering and its drink offering, you will offer it as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

9 On the Sabbath day two lambs in their first year, without blemish, and two-tenths of an ephah of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering— 10 this is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

11 At the beginnings of your months you will offer a burnt offering to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, seven lambs in their first year, without blemish; 12 three-tenths of an ephah of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one bull; and two-tenths of an ephah of flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one ram; 13 and one-tenth of an ephah of flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for one lamb; as a burnt offering of a pleasing aroma, a sacrifice made by fire to the Lord. 14 Their drink offerings will be one-half a hin of wine for a bull, and one-third of a hin for a ram, and one-fourth of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt offering of each month throughout the months of the year. 15 Also one male goat as a sin offering to the Lord shall be offered, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

16 On the fourteenth day of the first month is the Passover of the Lord. 17 On the fifteenth day of this month is the feast. Unleavened bread will be eaten for seven days. 18 On the first day there will be a holy convocation. You will not do any ordinary work, 19 but you will offer a sacrifice made by fire as a burnt offering to the Lord: two young bulls, and one ram, and seven lambs in their first year. Be sure they are without blemish. 20 And their grain offering will be of flour mixed with oil. Three-tenths of an ephah you will offer for a bull, and two-tenths of an ephah for a ram. 21 One-tenth of an ephah you will offer for each of the seven lambs, 22 and one goat as a sin offering, to make an atonement for you. 23 You will offer these in addition to the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a regular burnt offering. 24 The same way you will offer daily, throughout the seven days, the food of the sacrifice made by fire, as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. It will be offered in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering. 25 And on the seventh day you will have a holy assembly. You will not do any ordinary work.

26 And on the day of the first fruits, when you bring a new grain offering to the Lord at your Feast of Weeks, you will have a holy assembly. You will do no ordinary work. 27 But you will offer the burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year; 28 and their grain offering of flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ephah for one bull, two-tenths of an ephah for one ram, 29 one-tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs; 30 and one goat, to make an atonement for you. 31 Make sure they are without blemish. You will offer them with their drink offerings, besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering.

Mark 8

1 In those days, the crowds being very great with nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have now been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from afar.”

4 His disciples answered, “Where can one get bread to feed these men here in the wilderness?”

5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”

They said, “Seven.”

6 He commanded the people to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, He broke them and gave them to His disciples to serve. And they served the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And blessing them, He commanded that these also be served them. 8 So they ate and were filled. And they collected seven baskets of the broken pieces that were left. 9 There were about four thousand who had eaten, and He sent them away. 10 He immediately entered a boat with His disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

11 The Pharisees came up and began to debate with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven to test Him. 12 He sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” 13 Then He left them and, entering the boat again, departed to the other side.

14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread and did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15 He warned them, “Take heed. Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

16 They reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”

17 Being aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why do you reason that you have no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts still hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”

They said to Him, “Twelve.”

20 “And the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”

They said, “Seven.”

21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

22 He came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Him and entreated Him to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. When He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”

24 He looked up and said, “I see men as trees, walking.”

25 Then again He put His hands on his eyes and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26 He sent him home away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell it to anyone in the town.”

27 Jesus and His disciples went out into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. On the way He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”

28 They answered, “John the Baptist, but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Peter answered Him, “You are the Christ.”

30 He warned them that they should tell no one about Him.

31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said this openly. And Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him.

33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

34 When He had called the people to Him, with His disciples, He said to them, “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it. But whoever would lose his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whoever therefore is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
